Cabo's Legendary Waters

Where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez.

At the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, two bodies of water meet. The cool currents of the Pacific Ocean mingle with the warmer waters of the Sea of Cortez, creating one of the richest marine environments in the world. For anglers, that meeting point has long carried an almost mythical reputation, and each autumn, the waters off Los Cabos remind everyone why.

A Tradition Written on the Water

Long before Los Cabos became known for its resorts and restaurants, it was known among anglers who made the journey south in search of marlin. Their stories traveled home with them, and over time, a tradition took hold.

Today, sportfishing is part of the rhythm of the region. Boats leave the marina in the early hours, captains read the water with knowledge passed down through generations, and crews return in the afternoon with stories of the day. It is a discipline built on patience, skill and deep respect for the sea, and for many families it is a tradition shared across generations.

These waters are home to some of the most sought-after species in the sport: striped, blue and black marlin, along with dorado, tuna and wahoo. Each season brings its own movement, and those who know these waters well can read the ocean almost like a calendar.

The Spirit of the Release

One of the most meaningful shifts in modern sportfishing has been the practice of catch and release. Many anglers now return billfish to the sea after the fight, measuring a great day less by what comes home and more by the experience itself.

A quiet gesture of stewardship that helps protect the abundance that makes these waters so special.

October: The Season’s Grand Stage

Autumn is when Cabo's sportfishing tradition takes center stage. According to Visit Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas welcomes two of the Bisbee's tournaments this season:

Los Cabos Offshore · October 12–17
Known as "Little Bisbee's," with teams fishing for marlin, tuna and dorado.

Black & Blue · October 19–24
Devoted to giant black and blue marlin, it is often called the "Super Bowl of Fishing" and is regarded as one of the world's premier sportfishing competitions.

Earlier this year, the series began on the East Cape with the East Cape Offshore in Buena Vista. For a few weeks, the marina comes alive with crews, captains and spectators from around the world. Even for those who never plan to compete, it is a fascinating moment to witness: a celebration of skill, patience and the sea itself.
